I have worked in oils, colored pencil, watercolor and prints of various sorts since childhood.

My main focus has been on landscape, mainly local subjects, but also taken from images captured

during travel and from the media. My idol is Matisse, who, in his later years, gave us images that were semi-abstract,

yet endearing to the eye for their naturalness and clarity of form. Like him, I hope to express and inspire with a stroke, a line, a color never seen before, rooted in the natural world.

Julie Fisher is the featured artist for July and will read poetry from her

Julie created www.PoetryInBaltimore.com because Baltimore's poetry scene

is outstanding. She hosts 3rd Friday Night PerVerse, Essential Sundays @

Minas' Gallery and the B-More Erotic Performance Art Series. She cohosts

Kids Got Poetry Writing Series with her daughter Sophie. She frequently

supports and coordinates special events within the literary community as

well.

Her poems have appeared most recently in Baltimore Sun, Manorborn, Attic

and World According to Goldfish Anthology. She believes the practice of

writing poetry perches on the razor edge somewhere between self

involvement and spiritual exercise.

Liz Swanson, a Baltimore textile artist, became an artist from the feet up. In June 2000, she performed in Alzaruba’s interactive and collaborative performance pieces at such venues as: American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland Institute College of Art, Towson University, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Cazenovia, NY, The Creative Alliance, and Maryland Public Television.

As she danced in the vivid costumes, she began to understand color from the heart out. For Liz, hope is best expressed in movement. Also a writer, Liz asks, “Is there reason to hope?” For Liz, when words fail, there’s art! Her art answers, “Yes!” In that spirit, wearable art is her invitation to you to join the dance.

In “Love Made Material,” Liz creates collages of sequins, ribbon, feathers, and found objects on fabric. This wearable art calls to the whimsical in others. Wear it out in the world and nurture some hope and lightness of spirit, in yourself and in others

Road Mural

There will be a painting of the first horizontal mural on the intersection of Hamilton and Harford Road on June 5th. Hamilton Lauraville Main Streets (Regina Lansinger) will be closing a section of Harford Road to host their annual soap box derby. A crew of artists and older youth is being gathered to help paint. It should be a fun and crazy experience with some media coverage. There are two murals:

Mural #1 (Sunflower with compass in center) will take place on Sunday, June 5th during the Indie 900' Downhill Derby. This will be painted in the intersection of Hamilton Avenue & Harford Road. More details will be available once the paint. The plan is to start at 7:00am and be finished by 12:00 (11 would be better). The paint must dry for four hours. The street will re-open around 3:00-3:30.
Mural #2 (Market fruits & veggies) will take place on Sunday, June 26th during the Lauraville Business Association's Block Party. This will be painted inside the crosswalk from Safeway's entrance across Harford Road to Montebello Terrace. Same instructions as above.

The featured artist for the month of April is Jim Hammond.

Jim Hammond has been a dedicated photographer for more than 30 years. For most of that time, he was a professor at Penn State College of Medicine. Since retiring in 2008, he has divided his time between a home in Baltimore and a cottage on Delaware Bay. His work reflects a commitment to the environment. Seascapes from the east and west coasts, birds of Delmarva, as well as fish and other underwater subjects have been dominant themes.
He has had one or 2 person shows at Randolph Macon College, Penn State University, the Everhart Museum in Scranton Pa, Lebanon Valley College, the Art Association of Harrisburg and the Art Association of Reading PA. He was a founding member of Gallery 21, an artistsʼcooperative gallery in Reading Pa. He was also represented by the William Ris Gallery in Harrisburg.
In Baltimore, he is a member of the Art Exposure group and the Hamilton Gallery. In addition to the Hamilton Gallery, his work has been shown at the venues of Art Exposure Inc., at the offices of Federal Hill Main Street, the Chameleon Cafe, the Koba Cafe, The Inn at the Black Olive, Gallery 33, the Lotta Art Festival, and the Festival of Federal Hill Main Street.
His photographs have been published in the Washington Post and a Guidebook to Central Pennsylvania.

In “The Ghost of Poe,” poet and actor m. s. sanders explores the complexity of Edgar Allan Poe’s character through dramatic recitations of his poems, excerpts from his short stories as well as his correspondence and quotes.

This three act play seeks to demonstrate the correlations between his work and his struggle to deal with the universally human aspects of life, love and loss; a journey filled with obsession, humor, desperation, romance, remorse and resignation.

Rather than add to the confusion and contradiction often encountered when attempting to present a biographically accurate Poe, sanders strives for historical, yet dramatic and impassioned accuracy, by presenting a portrait of the man almost exclusively through his works and letters.

In this way, it is hoped the much beloved and esteemed poet, author and critic will be allowed to speak for himself, while his inscrutability and mystique remains intact.

Patric Pepper was born, and lives, in Washington D.C. His poems have
appeared in various magazines and anthologies, including Confrontation,
The Distillery, Medicinal Purposes Literary Review and The Comstock
Review. His chapbook, Zoned Industrial, was published by Poet to Poet,
Richmond Hill, New York, in 2000 as the first annual Medicinal Purposes
Chapbook Contest winner. His Poem “Judas Tree” won the 1998 Muriel Craft
Bailey Award from The Comstock Review. Since 1982 he has been a member of
the Capitol Hill Poetry Group, which published a twentieth anniversary
anthology, The Other Side of the Hill, 1975-1995, Forest Woods Media
Productions Inc., 1996.

Mary Ann Larkin is a poet, writer, teacher and former fund-raising and
publications consultant to nonprofit organizations. The Coil of the Skin,
a book of poems, was published by Washington Writers Publishing House in
1982. She is the author of four chapbooks: White Clapboard, by Carol
Allen of Philadelphia; The DNA of the Heart with Patric Pepper, published
by Pond Road Press; A Shimmering That Goes With Us by Finishing Line
Press in 2005; and gods & flesh by Plan B Press in early 2007. Her poems
have appeared in Poetry Ireland Review, New Letters, Poetry Greece and
numerous other magazines, as well as in more than twenty local and
national anthologies, including America In Poetry and Loving, a poetry
and art series published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. of New York.

Much thanks to the Hamilton Quilting Circle for raising $600 for the Hamilton Gallery: (from L to R) Ellen Slusarczyk, Pam Wallace, Dian Combs, Dawn Trageser, Sue Holmes, Jeannine, and Lynn Dodds. For months, the HQC members worked on a quilt which was raffled off in December. The Red Canoe won the quilt and it is currently hanging up in their shop.

As some of you know, a quilt circle gathers every Wednesday evening at the Hamilton Gallery to make quilts. This is a picture of the current quilt in process. The theme of this quilt is Sunflowers which is the gallery logo. Each square is someone’s interpretation of a sunflower. There are 16 squares so only a few are pictured below. Each square is framed in black & the back is a gold color – it measures approx 4’ x 4’ square. They are making this quilt as a fundraiser for the Hamilton Gallery which is a non profit art gallery in the Hamilton-Lauraville neighborhood. We are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win this quilt for $1 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5. The drawing will be held at the gallery on December 3rd (you do not need to be present to win). If you’re interested in buying any tickets, please let us know. This could make a lovely Christmas gift for someone special!

Bruce A. Jacobs is a poet, author, and musician.

His newest poetry performances treat poetry and music as one.
He founded the long-running First Tuesdays Poetry Reading
Series at Irina's Cafe in Baltimore in the 1990s.

Jacobs has won poetry slams in Baltimore and at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City. His books of poems are SPEAKING THROUGH MY SKIN, which won the Naomi Long Madgett Prize from Michigan State University, and CATHODE RAY BLUES from Tropos Press. His latest nonfiction book is RACE MANNERS FOR THE 21st Century. Jacobs has appeared on NPR's "Talk of the Nation," C-SPAN, Sirius Satellite Radio, and other networks. His work has appeared in dozens of poetry journals and anthologies, including 180 MORE, edited by national Poet Laureate Billy Collins. He plays drums, poems, and saxophone. He does not know how to do long division.

Kwaidan is a 1964 Japanese portmanteau film directed by Masaki Kobayashi; the title means “ghost story”. It is based on stories from Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folk tales. The film consists of four separate and unrelated stories. It won the Special Jury Prize at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination.

The Hamilton Quilt Circle meets every Wednesday at the

Hamilton Gallery from 6:30PM-9PM. If you just want to

hang out and learn to quilt and meet some nice people,

come on down! No matter what you skill level, age,

gender, or shoe size you are welcome to participate.

If you are able to thread a needle and make a stitch,

you meet the requirements. The Hamilton Quilt Circle

is currently working on quilts that will be raffled off

in December as fundraisers to benefit the Hamilton

Gallery and Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street.

P'zzazz your clothes! Join Jude Asher for a 3 week quick course in embellishing clothing. Learn basic embroidery, applique & beading techniques to make your clothes fabulous. Students will need to supply an item of clothing, ( or tote bag, hat, whatever), supplies such as needles, thread, pins, beads and some fabric will be supplied. There will be a continuing fabric swap during the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be invited to display their results in the December Gallery show. Classes begin Sun 10/24 and continue over the next 2 Sundays (10/24, 10/31, and 11/7), from 2:30-4:00 pm. Cost is $30 per person for the session. all skill levels welcome. Thanks to all who came out. We raised money for the Gallery, had a large crowd, and it appears that a good time was had by all! The work of our guest artist, Nan Thompson (www.nansalchemy.com) and our featured artist, Brandy Baker, will be on display throughout the month October as well as the works of our member artists.

The Hamilton Gallery is proud to be hosting local artist Nan Thompson for the month of October. Thompson, who resides in Nottingham, MD is a retired interior decorator who specializes in making paper and transforming it into various forms of decorative and practical art. Thompson also practices other art mediums such as: stained glass, drawing, acrylic painting, Sumi-e (Chinese brush painting), polymer clay and photography. In addition to our monthly guest artist, Hamilton Gallery will feature the works of an artist who is a member of the Gallery. This month's feature artist is Brandy Baker.

For the month of October, the Hamilton Gallery will also

display the work of many member artists including:

PerVerse: Where Art Gets Twisted

Poetry reading with several features and open mike. 
Sponsored by Poetry in Baltimore and hosted by Julie Fisher.  Featured Poets: Gene Hosey and Cliff Lynn  Gene Hosey's poetry has been seen world-wide, through his own efforts at printing up performance copies of works and getting them into the saddle bags of willing mules who are traveling anywhere.  Having not concentrated on the grind of seeking publication, he has been lucky enough to be seen occasionally by publishers who invite him to make books, none of which are available currently.  Hosey has performed with fellow artists in theater, music, filmmaking, recording, television and radio, to name a few, in locations you are all familiar with, geographically speaking.  

Cliff Lynn is an award-winning poet and orioles fan.  He hasn't won any awards for the latter.  A retired navy man, he has read poetry in Vegas, California, Texas, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia and Maryland, and gets kicked out of Denny's a lot....with multi-media poet Rocky Jones, he co-hosts two monthly reading series in Annapolis, and with R.J. Ridgely, one series in Westminster. cliff was the inspiration for the barbara decesare instant classic 3-act mini-play "cliff gets kicked out of denny's a lot".  his favorite poets include richard brautigan, gene hosey and julie "fisher king" fisher.

Intro to Digital Photography

Bought a new camera but can't figure out how to use it? Or maybe you know how to use it, but you'd like some tips on getting stronger images. Or maybe you are still working with film and want to take the leap into digital.

Introduction to Digital Photography will be offered at Hamilton Gallery on Saturday, September 25 and October 2. On October 16, the class will meet at Loch Raven Reservoir. (there will be no class on October 9).

Photographer and long-time Hamilton Gallery member Ron Cohn will be teaching this class, which will run from 9AM-11:45AM. The first hour will consist of lecture and the rest of the time will be devoted to individual consultation with students. Cost for the class is $25.

Photo editing - what can be done  (this class does NOT cover how to edit photos)

Ron Cohn has been taking photographs for nearly 40 years. He switched to digital over six years ago and never looked back. He has owned and used four digital cameras; his current camera is a Nikon D300. Ron has sold scores of photos in various venues since joining the Hamilton Gallery over four years ago. Ron is a people-friendly, retired electrical engineer who taught and wrote about technical subjects throughout his career.

Kids Got Poetry: Kids' Poetry Night on October 7 at the Hamilton Gallery

On October 7, at 6PM, Hamilton Gallery will be hosting Kids Got Poetry. An evening for kids started by kids (well, a kid with the help of her mom). Introduces kids to the art and practice of poetry. All kids get to read their works.

$5 admission for each kid; all kids must be accompanied by an adult.

Free admissions with donations to the Gallery welcome. Introduction and Discussion led by Reed Hessler Radio announcer and avid film collector. Smoke Signals (1998) is directed and co-produced by Chris Eyre and with a screenplay by Sherman Alexie. Alexie also authored the short story collection on which the film is based, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. It won several awards and was well received at numerous film festivals.
